Frequently asked questions
How secure are my diary entries?
All entries stay on your device, stored in an AES-256-encrypted database (SQLCipher). The encryption key is derived from your credentials (PIN, password or biometrics) — no access is possible without your authentication. Not even we can read your entries.
How does cloud backup work?
You can optionally upload an encrypted backup to your own iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive (Android). Before upload, we encrypt the backup with a password of your choice (AES-256-GCM). Nobody but you — not even we — can decrypt the backup.
Important: If you lose the backup password, recovery is impossible. Note your password down safely (use a password manager).
How do I cancel Shiru Premium?
Subscriptions are managed through your Apple or Google account:
- iOS: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Shiru Premium → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Google Play Store → Profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions → Shiru Premium → Cancel.
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period — your premium access stays active until then.
Where are my purchases when I switch devices?
Tap "Restore Purchases" in the app settings. You need to be signed in on the new device with the same Apple or Google account you used for the original purchase.
I forgot my app password — what now?
The app password protects your local database. Because the encryption key is derived directly from the password, there is no "forgot password" function — otherwise the encryption would be worthless. If you don't know the password any more and don't have a cloud backup with a separate backup password, access is unfortunately no longer possible. In that case you would need to reset the app, and your local data would be lost.
How do I delete all my data?
Uninstall the app from your device — that removes all locally stored diary data. If you enabled cloud backup, additionally delete the backup file from your iCloud or Google Drive:
- iCloud: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Shiru → Delete.
- Google Drive: Via the App Data Folder — easiest via drive.google.com/drive/settings → Manage apps → Shiru → Delete hidden app data.
Can I export my data?
Yes — via the settings you can create a local, encrypted backup and share it via the system share sheet or store it locally. We deliberately do not provide a plain-text export to prevent data leaks.
Which devices does Shiru support?
- iOS: iPhone and iPad with iOS 13 or later
- Android: Android 8.0 (API level 26) or later
